Educopia is excited to offer a free, interactive workshop designed to help knowledge workers (from independent publishers, libraries, research networks, archives, project teams, museums, etc.) build better decision-making frameworks within their organizations. With nearly two decades of experience supporting communities in the knowledge sector, and having emerged from our own period of learning and transition, we know that effective decision-making isnโt just about solving challengesโitโs about understanding the tools you use, who holds the power, and how those decisions shape the culture of your organization. If youโve been navigating making decisions that are inclusive, sustainable, or aligned with your values, this event is for you.

What you can expect from the workshop:
The workshop, titled โThe Art of Collective Decision-Making,โ is focused on helping you think critically about the decision-making processes in your organization. Weโll explore key questions, including:
- How and when do decisions get made?
- Who makes those decisions?
- How is power distributed within the group?
- What systems and processes are in place to clarify roles, responsibilities, and decision-making procedures?
We’re also going to dig into the tools you use for decision-making and the impact those tools have on the collective culture of your organization. How do the tools you use influence who holds power and who gets a say? Are there unintended consequences that emerge from your current process?
Throughout the workshop, weโll help you explore decision-making processes that are not only effective but also more equitable, inclusive, and aligned with your organizational values. In doing so, we hope to open up conversations around sustainability and prioritizationโhelping groups that feel stuck or uncertain about what to do next and how to move forward. Weโll also share tools and strategies that have worked for us here at Educopiaโtools that have helped us build stronger, more sustainable, and community-driven decision-making processes. These tools can be immediately adapted to your own organization, whether youโre volunteer-driven, loosely structured, or more established.
Based on our own Staff’s diverse experiences both as knowledge workers and providers of consultative and backbone services, we’re hoping that this workshop might begin to address the lack of formal training or support around leadership development in the knowledge sector. It is designed to help you build the skillset needed to intervene and lead within your organizationโfrom your position as an archivist, librarian, facilitator or other knowledge worker. By the end of the workshop, we hope you come away with:
- A deeper understanding of how to make decisions collaboratively and equitably, with clarity around who is involved at each stage.
- Tools for clarifying roles, responsibilities, and decision-making procedures, and making those processes more transparent and inclusive.
